Kotlin Android Tutorial for Beginners

Kotlin is a statically-typed programming language that runs on the JVM. It can also be compiled to JavaScript source code.Using kotlin in your android application is very easy , you will just have to follow these steps:

  1. 1- If your android version is less than 3.0.0 you will need to install the kotlin plugin, go to File | Settings | Plugins | Install JetBrains plugin… and then search for and install Kotlin, you will need to restart your IDE after this step.
  2. 2- Create a new project, Choose Start a new Android Studio project or File | New project.
  3. 3- Now you need to convert your java code to kotlin, open your java file then open your Find Action and start typing Convert java file to kotlin file. Then you will see your java class converted to kotlin.
  4. 4-Now the IDE knows what to do with Kotlin, but your project app doesn’t, so your next move is to modify the project’s build configuration.Go to Tools|Kotlin|Configure Kotlin in Project.Then select Android with Gradle. Choose the latest available version then press OK.
  5. 5- Go to your build.gradle and you should find it ready to be updated by Sync Now and you can start building your app using kotlin

One of the most amazing qualities of Kotlin is how it can coexist with Java on a project. Java code can be called from Kotlin and vice versa.
